Motor Servicing
Today was the second day we attempted to start up the engine of the Viking. The first attempt two weeks ago was very short lived as the battery cable for the 24 V system was compromised. Having repaired the cable we now were equipped to get on the task. A few small checks on the electrical system and the starter motor started up.. Next step was checking the fuel lines and cleaning the lines and removing any water which had accumulated in the tanks. No surprises here, there was some water in the tanks as well as some rust in the pipes. overall the task wasn't too difficult and after a couple of small trays clean diesel was running. Fuel line reconnected to the fuel pump, we opened up the water filter, lots of gunk in there. We drained the filter, however a proper cleaning was foiled as one of the screws didn't wanted to cooperate. All lines reconnected we started up the starter motor again, yet instead of nicely turning the motor, the starter motor only shortly engaged, then continued to run however without turning the flywheel. Another step in the toruble shootong. We first attempted to move the flywheel and turn the motor by hand, which was succesful in pumping some diesel back up to the fuel filter, however it was also laboursome. The next step was to take off the starter motor and investigate. No obvious fault could be found. may be the clutch inside of the wheel may be the solinoid. Time had been flying and it was time to head home. The starter motor is a SAWAFUJI Electric Model number MS5002D-24DL- 24 V -3.7 KW. The motor is off course not anymore available and neither Google nor Bing provided any clues in regard, what may be a replacement. On the phone to a number of local and not so local comapnies didn't made any progress either and so it may just be that I reinstall the starter motor and hope that the problem is the solinoid which should allow us to manually engage the starter motor with the flywheel. This will be the next weeks task. |
